VPN, or Virtual Private Networks, are networks that make use of public telecommunication services (in this case, the internet) to offer secure access to a network. What it does is summarize transfers of data between two (or more) networked devices so that the data that is transferred can remain private. VPN is therefore an ideal platform for viewing international television.

Furthermore, it is argued that VPNs offer improved performance in terms of less bandwidth being used. Another benefit VPN offers is the fact that geographical restrictions no longer exist. Shows screened only in one country are now accessible all over the world, creating a networked global village of television buffets.
